The Leicester primary leagues originated as an intra-school football competition organised and hosted by the Leicester City Primary Schools Football Association. At the beginning of the 2022/23 academic year, Inspire Together took over the coordination of the league to ensure sustainability, as the association made up of volunteers did not have the capacity to continue with what had developed into a major undertaking with 50+ schools involved.

The 2022/23 season was the first in which schools were asked to compete with both a boys' and a girls' team as a condition of entry to the league. As a result we welcomed 62 boys' and 58 girls' teams of year 5&6 pupils from 55 schools. That number has risen this year to 63 boys' & 61 girls' teams with scope to increase these numbers in the coming years! This totalled around 1300 year 5 and 6 boys and girls from across Leicester City schools all taking part in the Inspire Together Primary Football League competition over a single year. Each year the leagues culminate in a Final's Day Showcase Event that welcomes the best teams from across the city. We then crown Leicester Champions for the Division 1 boys and girls Cup Competition and the Division 2 boys and girls in the Plate Competition.
