Secondary Girls Football

Game On-Go Teach Training and Resources (curricular)

Barclays Game On part of England Football was developed by the Youth Sport Trust (YST) in partnership with England Football.

Barclays Game On is designed to support secondary schools to engage girls in curriculum physical education through a life skills approach, using football as the vehicle.

The life skills approach supports teachers to increase girls’ self-esteem, confidence and engagement in PE through an approach that enables all young people to flourish in PE, school and life.

Through the training and resources teachers will build knowledge and confidence delivering different football related activities to engage girls.

Game on - Go Play training and Resource pack (Extra-curricular)

Barclays Game On – GO Play supports schools to set up an extra-curricular football offer for girls in key stage 3 via a fantastic week by week resource pack! For a short time only, we have an exciting incentive that will see the first 200 schools who register for the resource will receive £100 kit voucher to spend on equipment for their school.

Barclays Game On – GO Play resource packs include nine ready-made and easy to follow session plans, a menu of game cards, top tips for delivering sessions to meet all your girls needs and more! All of the activities, games and practises in the pack have been designed specifically to engage girls aged 12-14 whether they are a regular player or brand new to football! The focus of the sessions is around bringing girls together, having fun and developing a love for football and building girls confidence and their ability to make active choices.

We know one of the biggest challenges for schools in terms of extracurricular girls football provision is a lack of staff time. The Barclays Game On – GO Play session plans provide ready-made, simple and clear content to minimise planning and preparation time for teachers, as well as provide confidence to those teachers who feel they lack football specific expertise

The session plans have been designed in a way that means they could also be delivered by young activators or leaders within your school.

Packs include:

  • Nine week by week session plans
  • 11 brand new game cards
  • Top tips for scaffolding sessions
  • Barclays Game On – GO Play folder
  • Teacher start up guide

Game on-Go Lead (Leadership)

Barclays Game On – GO Lead empowers girls with the tools and training to become girls’ football activators to design, create and deliver football activities to their peers to engage new and different girls.

We know that girls often lack the confidence to take on leadership roles, particularly in football. We also know that girls enjoy taking part in sessions designed for them, by them. Barclays Game On - GO Lead will provide schools with three key outcomes:

  • Empower girls to design, create and deliver football activities to their peers to engage new and different girls.
  • Support girls to become activators, to understand what leadership is, and to articulate and apply the skills they have developed.
  • Provide girls with training, resources and kit to support them in their activator roles.

As a school you can access virtual, flexible training, resources and Barclays Game On kit for all of your girls’ football activators.

During Spring Term 2 we ran a girls football leadership conference at the Morningside Arena alongside the Youth Sport Trust (YST). It was great to see so much interest from Secondary schools, with 9 schools signed up to attend the event.

Throughout the conference the girls will rotate round different activities. They started the day by listening to a keynote speech by Jenna from the YST. In the morning they took part in different workshops which were delivered by the ambassadors from the Youth Sport Trust. During lunch time they took part in some of the #LLRGirlsFootballWeek challenges and then took part in more workshops including a ‘Go Teach Refresher’. They also developed an action plan for back in school which shows how they are going to implement what they have learnt.

Whistlers (Officiating)

Whistlers by England Football is a programme for girls aged 11-14 which introduces them to the core skills of officiating and helps grow their confidence more broadly within a leadership role. Girls will be provided with a basic knowledge of the laws of the game, develop communication skills and confidence to allow girls to support the delivery of festivals and competitions on completion of the programme.

The programme follows a ‘train the trainer’ model. Teachers that sign up to the programme will be provided with a two-hour virtual orientation session. Once teachers have attended this, they can deliver six one-hour Whistlers workshops within their school to their chosen group of girls.
